Dear Parents and Students,
My name is Mrs. Terrazas and it is my pleasure to welcome you, and your child, to a new school year at Bassett Middle School—Home of the HOUNDS!! I am excited about the unlimited learning possibilities that will arise for your child on a daily basis.
Academic success comes with challenges and much responsibility. Therefore, as a class, we will be focusing on objectives that will enhance each student’s knowledge of core concepts. This means that your child will always be learning—even when he/she is enjoying themselves. Texas students take the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR). Each year, this test brings with it new challenges, but our goals here at Bassett Middle School remain the same—to guarantee your child’s all-around academic success. Therefore, I will be requesting several things from my students at all times.
The first thing I request is their best effort. All work must be completed neatly; according to instructions; and on time. Therefore, please encourage your child to begin assignments and projects in a timely manner. The second is to treat others as they would expect to be treated. The third is to be truthful—not only in speaking to his/her teacher, but through being truthful about where he/she stands academically. If a student needs help, he/she should ask for it. With these expectations in mind, I will uphold three simple-but essential-expectations: BE RESPONSIBLE; BE RESPECTFUL; BE HONEST.
Because communication is the key for students to be successful in school, below are some things that you can do to help your child be successful in his/her classes:
§ Keep all phone numbers/email addresses updated with the front office and the teacher
§ Ask questions about your child’s assignments/projects (there will always be something for your child to be working on or studying)
§ Be as prompt as possible when returning the teacher’s phone calls
§ Don’t assume that every phone call is a bad phone call
§ If any unwelcome issues arise, please call/email as soon as possible
It is my ultimate goal to create a stress-free environment, where all of my students are able to thrive academically. I believe in focusing my attention on my students’ positive qualities and keeping our activities challenging, but interesting. I do not anticipate misbehavior from my students, but if it does arise, I will first discuss the behavior with the student. In most cases, this resolves the matter. If the behavior persists, I will promptly notify the parent(s) via email, phone call, or conference (whether at school or at the student’s home).
Please know that I view my position as your child’s teachers with great pride. It is my hope that you are as committed as I am to making this school year a productive, enriching, and rewarding year for all students. Again, welcome to a great year at Bassett Middle School.

CLASSROOM POLICIES
Classroom Environment
Students are expected to come to class in the required standardized dress. No food (candy, gum, etc.) or drinks of any kind are to be consumed during instructional class time. Students are expected to be attentive, respectful and cooperative throughout the class period. When in cooperative groups, students are expected to work diligently and promptly. No one has the right to interfere with the learning of others. It is with this statement in mind that I have set up rules based on the following three principles: Be Responsible; Be Respectful; Be Honest.
Based on the above principles, the following is expected of all students:
1. Be seated and ready to begin class on time
2. Bring all necessary materials to class each day
3. Treat everyone with courtesy and respect
4. Keep all school property neat and clean (no food, drinks, or gum)
5. Refrain from cheating or committing plagiarism
6. Be essential in making this class a positive learning environment
**Failure to honor the above principles in our classroom may result in the following:
Homework Policy
All homework is due the next day at the beginning of the class period/assigned due date, unless otherwise stated. If there is an issue regarding an online assignment, please email me as soon as possible before the next day. If the assignment is not turned in by 3p.m. on the date it is due, the assignment is considered late and will result in a deduction of 10 points for each day the assignment is not turned in to me. If the assignment is still not turned in after the deduction of points, an alternate assignment will be assigned for a maximum grade of “50.” Even though points will be deducted for a late assignment, I would much rather have the assignment completed, than be forced to give any student a grade of “0.”
Students will be assigned projects during the school year. Projects will be assigned both individually and in cooperative groups. All projects must be turned in on or before the deadline and are held to the same late assignment consequences outlined in the previous paragraph. There is no make-up for a project that is not turned in.
Make Up Work
Students who miss assignments due to an excused absence are expected to complete all missed assignments within a reasonable time (to be determined by District Policy and teacher) upon returning to school. To find out about the work that was assigned during their absence, students can call a friend, or ask the teacher. Tests must be made up during the first three days of the student returning to class. In case of long-term absences, parents are encouraged to call the school office and request a list of assignments well ahead of your departure.
Mandatory Tutoring
In order to ensure that all my students experience academic success, students who are in jeopardy of failing will be provided tutoring with me before or after school.
Students must attend mandatory tutoring:
· If student is failing
· If student is below the grade of 75
·
Grading Scale
